Most of my batik paintings are quite large and originals sell from $1200 to $5000 dollars. They are beautifully framed, using ph neutral products and u.v. protective glass.

"Pickin' Blues in Pinks"

Batik Art - 30 x 33 1/2
(Giclee Prints Available)

I work part time as a waitress and during the summer we serve a lot of "dudes" from the local ranches. I developed an affinity for this aspect of our Western heritage. I love the costuming and the way the sun casts interesting shadows throughout the day. The whole scene is visually very stimulating.

"Thunder"

Batik Art - 42 x 38
(Giclee Prints Available)

Thunder just seemed to happen. From whence it came I do not know! It happened as my daughter was getting ready to head off to college and she was going through her Bryer horse collection. The way the sun came through her window and fell on the horses made me see the equestrian theme as possible fodder for a batik painting. I have done several more along these lines and view horses in an entirely different light now. Great subject matter for the expression of movement and grace.

"Aspen Rose"

Batik Art - 26 x 34
(Giclee Prints Available)

I spent many years with the aspen tree theme. I am surrounded by aspens where I live and they translated so well in batik. Although I am not particularly interested in landscapes these days, the aspens seem to have such personality, which is fun to try and capture in batik. This particular aspen batik was a challenge in that the colors were all "over dyed" and to get such a nice blue along with a clear pink was not easy.

"Lillies"

Batik Art - 39 x 47
(Giclee Prints Available)

This piece challenged me all summer long. It started out as a pencil drawing I did of a still life I had set up in my studio. Speed is not my forte, which made the initial drawing a challenge because new lillies would bloom overnight changing my entire composition. From the pencil drawing I did a watercolor painting, and did the batik using both the drawing and the painting as reference. This piece required an incredible amount of discipline to see it through. Many times I thought it might be done, but then I'd look at it and know I could do better. I would then remove the wax and re-do the entire batik over what had previously been done. It is a beautiful piece and the results were worth the struggle.

"Wild Iris"

Batik Art -15 x 16
(Giclee Prints Available)

This piece was done originally as a graphite and colored pencil drawing. The first batik I did of it is very large and hangs in a private collection. I worked the piece in several different phases, waxing out portions of the fabric to work on one side of the color spectrum, removing the wax and then working the other side of the color spectrum. I did the same batik but on a much smaller scale. The results were quite lovely, but I much prefer working on larger pieces. It allows you to get intimate with your subject matter in a way that doesn't happen with the smaller pieces.

"Rainbow Warrior"

Batik Art - 34 x 46

I had a commision to do a batik of a Sioux chief's headdress and after sketching it a few times, I realized it was seriously missing the head in the composition. I did several different drawings from old photos to come up with a profile that was compatible. I ended up doing this same composition above five different times: each one with a different color theme and each one with it's own spirit.

"Bashful"

Batik Art - 29 x 32

This batik was done from a slide of a friend, Mike Donahue, from his travels to Africa. It was one of the first pieces I tried using fabric that had previously been dyed in random colors. My challenge with this piece was to minimize the amount of dye baths I used to the bare minimum necessary to make the image distinguishable.

"Father Christmas"

Batik Art - 20 x 20.5
(Giclee Prints Available)

This "Father Christmas" image was inspired by the father of some friends of ours in Vermont. The original attempt to do his portrait was titled "Zetto in his woodlot". Eventually he transformed into a cross between St. Francis and St. Nicholas, my "Father Christmas".
